FAQ
Spider veins (also known as thread veins, fine veins, or Telangectasia), are those small, red, pink and blue blood vessels that appear most frequently on the face and legs.
Spider veins are a common development from sun damage and from ageing – or some people are genetically disposed to them. They are cosmetically undesirable and can make the face appear older, flushed, or blemished.
- Some people have a genetic likelihood of developing spider veins
- Certain medical conditions can promote development of thread veins
- Habits such as smoking and drinking alcohol can also exacerbate the development of fine veins
- Sun and changing temperatures can make spider veins appear more prominent
Getting rid of spider veins is simple and straightforward with laser vein removal. These treatments are simple and can effective for both facial veins and veins on legs.
Spider vein removal at Laser Skin Technologies is done with a Cutera Excel HR Laser using long wavelength laser light which is strongly absorbed by haemoglobin in the veins. The laser light quickly coagulates or vaporises the spider veins, eventually destroying the vessels while leaving the surrounding tissue intact.
Usually one or two laser treatments remedy the situation and destroy the veins, though this will depend on the number of vessels being treated and their location. A more accurate indication would be given to you at your consultation before your first treatment.

The laser emits only light, and the sensation is like the snapping of a rubber band as the light destroys the vein. What’s more, our Cutera Excel Laser has a cooling hand piece which keeps the surrounding tissue cool while the laser targets the veins. No needles are used, and pain medication is not required.
New veins can form over time which can easily be treated, and some measures can be taken to slow down new growth of veins:
- Avoid the sun if possible
- Use sun block when you are in the sun
- Apply a topical Vitamin C cream which helps build the tissue around veins so that veins are less obvious
There is no requirement for tight stockings, although vigorous activity is discouraged for the first 24 hours after treatment. Occasionally when large areas of veins are treated some local swelling may occur which usually disappears within 24 to 48 hours. Occasionally a small area of tan or brownish pigment may appear which may persist for a few weeks or months following treatment.
Some bruising may remain for several weeks when large areas of the legs are treated, but this is not painful, there can be restrictions on activities after spider vein removal treatments. This will be discussed during a consultation and when the post care instructions are given.
We suggest that no alcohol is taken for the first 24 hours after treatment and also no strenuous exercise. It’s also best to avoid hot showers and also spicy foods. We will discuss recommendations for pre and post treatment at your consultation. There is a list of take home instructions which will be given to you after your treatment.
