Milia Removal / Extraction

A Milium Cyst is a small white bump that typically appears on the eyelids and cheeks.

These cysts occur when keratin becomes trapped beneath the surface of the skin. Keratin is a protein that is typically found in the hair, nails and skin. This is often caused by the use of incorrect skin care, cosmetics or long-term sun damage.

Milia are very small; they are dome shaped and usually white or yellow in colour. They are not painful or itchy.

Treating Milia

Treatment is simple and quick with minimal discomfort. This is done by deroofing the Milia with a sterile needle which is used to pick out the contents of the cyst. Chemical peels and ablation therapy (Plasmage) may also be appropriate. To help stop the re-occurrence of Milia cysts, some medications such as topical retinoids / vitamin A creams can be used.

FAQ

What is Milia?

It is a dome shaped ‘white’ or ‘yellow’ coloured bump, most commonly found on eyelids and cheekbones but can present in other areas of face. It is a build up of the protein keratin. There can be only one or multiple and in clusters.

Why do i get Milia?

Milia is trapped dead skin cells that form cysts below the surface of the skin. They can be caused due to the use of topical skin care. These can have a genetic component, meaning your skin type is more prone to getting milia cysts.

What is the treatment for Milia?

At laser skin technologies we use a deroofing technique and a sterile needle to remove the contents. If required we may also use plasmage which is a heat based needle to open the cyst and remove the contents.
